Catherine Boyle

Catherine Boyle

Steering Group
Catherine Boyle is Professor of Latin American Cultural Studies at King’s College London. She was a co-founder of the Journal of Latin American Cultural Studies. She leads the theatre translation and performance project, the Out of the Wings Collective. She is a translator of Spanish and Spanish American theatre and poetry. Her translations have been performed internationally and she has published widely on questions of Latin American cultural and gender studies and translation. Since 2016, she is the Director of the Centre for Language Acts and Worldmaking, dedicated to regenerating and transforming approaches to teaching and research in Modern Languages.

Hilary Brown

Principal Investigator
Hilary Brown is Principal Investigator on the ‘Feminist Translation Network’ project. She is Associate Professor in Translation Studies at the University of Birmingham. Her recent research has explored the significance of gender in translation history and her publications include Women and Early Modern Cultures of Translation: Beyond the Female Tradition (OUP 2022).

Olga Castro

Co-Investigator
Olga Castro is Co-Investigator on the ‘Feminist Translation Network’ project. She is “Beatriz Galindo” Distinguished Senior Researcher at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, and Reader (Associate Professor) in Translation and Transcultural Studies at the University of Warwick (on leave 2024-2027). She is co-founder and editor-in-chief of the Feminist Translation Studies journal (Taylor and Francis, 2024), and her publications include co-edited volumes such as Translating Women in the Anglosphere: Activism in Action (ITI 2021), Feminist Translation Studies: Local and Transnational Perspectives (Routledge 2017) and the monograph Feminismos (Xerais 2013).

Emek Ergun

Steering Group

Emek Ergun is Associate Professor of Women’s and Gender Studies and Global Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Among her publications are the co-edited volume Feminist Translation Studies: Local and Transnational Perspectives (Routledge, 2017) and the monograph Virgin Crossing Borders: Feminist Resistance and Solidarity in Translation (University of Illinois Press, 2023), as well as a number of translations.

Duncan Large

Steering Group
Duncan Large is Executive Director of the British Centre for Literary Translation at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. He is Professor of European Literature and Translation at UEA, and Chair of the PETRA-E Network of European literary translation training institutions.  He is a translator as well as a researcher and co-editor of the monograph series Routledge Studies in Literary Translation. His most recent book publications include Untranslatability: Interdisciplinary Perspectives (co-ed. with Motoko Akashi, Wanda Józwikowska and Emily Rose, Routledge, 2019).

Charlotte Ryland

Steering Group
Charlotte Ryland is Director of the Stephen Spender Trust and founding Director of the Queen’s College Translation Exchange (Oxford), organisations dedicated to promoting language-learning, multilingualism and translation. In both of these roles she aims to engage people of all ages and backgrounds in literary translation, and to bring creative translation activities into UK schools. Until 2019 Charlotte ran New Books in German, a UK-based project that promotes German-language literature across the world.

Gabriela Saldanha

Steering Group

Gabriela Saldanha is on the Steering Group for the ‘Feminist Translation Network’. She has a long-standing interest in gender and literary translation and is author of a chapter on ‘Feminist Positionalities in Translation Studies’ together with Hilary Brown (2024). She is a researcher at the Centre for Sustainable Healthcare Education, University of Oslo, where she is working on the development of the Sustainability and HEealth Corpus (SHE) and is Project Manager for the Erasmus+ Partnership for Cooperation, Debating Democracy.
